Have you ever thought of why we have words that end in 'o' but either the plural version is just the 's' or 'es'?
Potatoes, tomatoes.
But pianos, avocados, photos, zeros.
Grammarly explains why:
"But of course, there are exceptions. (Aren’t there always?) Some words ending in -o that are borrowed from other languages take only an s to make a plural, such as pianos, cantos, photos, and zeros. Cello, which is an abbreviation of the Italian word violoncello, can be pluralized in the traditional way, as celli, or the commonly accepted anglicized way, as cellos."
Some words we have grown so accustomed to, we don't know WHERE they originated from.
Do you have trouble spelling the plural version of some of these words? I tend to search for the spelling to be sure I'm doing it correctly!
